Career Resources: Computer Help

Technology is a wide area that covers a large number of products that can seem at times to be overwhelming. Never fear because at the library, we offer a wide variety of materials to help you learn about anything from software programs to your actual computer to any device that you may come into contact with.

If you have a Davenport Library card, you can check out materials from any local Rivershare library. If you are looking for different materials than the ones provided in this guide, visit the library catalog and place a hold on any item you are looking for.

Pair the words "teaching" or "learning" or "help" with any of the previous words and you can find soem more options. If you are looking for a specific program, try searching that program within our catalog as well.

The call number for most of the computer help books start around 000. Both nonfiction books and nonfiction DVDs can be found aroudn that call number.

• Universal Class is an online educational resource that the library subscribes to that offers access to over 500 continuing education classes ranging from web development to teaching to career training.
• You will have to set up an account to use this resource, but it's completely free. You will use your username and password to login every time. The reason you have to create an account is so that you can keep track of your progress in each class, access your email, and create and manage your profile and classes.

• The most relevant part of Universal Class to this guide section is Computer Training. Once you login, scroll and check out the options available to you. Universal Class offers classes with varying degress of continuing education credit from computer basics to software programs to learning HTML. Learn Adobe, Microsoft, and a host of other computer skills.

• The Learning Express Library is a database that the library subscribes to that offers career and edcuational help on a wide variety of subjects.
• You can explore the site without an account, but you will need to create a free account if you wish to register for one of the classes. This account lets you track the progress you make and keep a list of the courses you have already taken.

• For computer help, check out the Learning Express Library's Computer Skills Center. You can either utilize the search box if you know what kind of help you are seeking or check out the guides that are already put together to help you learn about how your computer works, how the internet works, as well as information about different software tools, your computer's operating system, and how the graphics and illustrator programs work within your computer.
• Curious about how to use a certain program? Check out the Popular Software Tools section to learn such programs like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and many others.

• If you're applying for a job that requires specific computer skills not listed on Universal Class, head over to Lynda.com. This resource provides courses ranging from various software platforms to very specific CAD, developer, and design programs. Use Lynda.com to search for job-specific training that you need that may not be available anywhere else.

• If the website looks confusing or you can't find what you are looking for, be sure to utilize the Browse the Library option at the top of the page or the Search box right next to it. This resource contains more options than Universal Class, but be sure to try each to see which one best suits your needs.
• Lynda.com also offers German, French, and Spanish trainings available through video2brain.
