Seed Library Growing Companion: Seed Sources

Lists of books and resources on starting, growing and harvesting vegetables and flowers in your own back yard! Created in conjunction with the Davenport Library Seed Library.

Seed Savers Exchange

Currently, all of our seeds are from Seed Savers Exchange in Decorah, Iowa. Some were purchased and some were part a grant of seeds generously donated by Seed Savers.

Seed Savers Exchange is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of open pollinated, heirloom varieties of seeds. Some of these seeds have been in circulation for centuries while others have been passed down for generations. They have persisted in backyard gardens because of their adaptability, ease of growing and, most importantly, excellent flavor.

From the Seed Savers Exchange “about” page:

“We built a movement, not a seed company.

Since 1975, we have grown, saved, and shared heirloom seeds and led a movement to protect biodiversity and preserve heirloom varieties. At the heart of our organization is a seed bank that houses a collection of 20,000+ rare, open-pollinated varieties. With gardeners like you, we can get these seeds where they belong—in gardens and on tables everywhere, for generations to come.

When seeds are in our bank, they are protected. When seeds are growing in your garden, they thrive.

Thank you for growing with us.”
