The Quad Cities is an ideal location for bird watching whether you're just starting out or are an experienced bird watching enthusiast. Located in the heart of the Mississippi Flyway, an important migratory route for hundreds of species of birds, the Quad City area sees many birds that are not typical residents. Scott County, Iowa and Rock Island County, Illinois are also at the southern tip of the Upper Mississippi National Wildlife Refuge which encourages the preservation of the natural habitats of native birds and animals; There is almost endless opportunity for seeing birds of all kinds, all year round here on our doorstep!
The Quad Cities is home to a wide range of birds, some year round and some that come for the summer. The range of habitats - forests, open fields, wetlands, streams and rivers - means we have the opportunity to see an amazing diversity of birds throughout the year.
Just a few of the common birds you can see include Robins, Cardinals, Blue Jays, Chickadees, American Goldfinch, House Wrens, Song Sparrows, Crows, House Sparrows, Tuffted Titmice, Nuthatch, House Finch, Red-Wing Blackbirds, Starlings, Catbirds, Mourning Doves, Hummingbirds, and various woodpeckers.
Along streams, rivers and wetlands you'll see all kinds of ducks, geese, pelicans, Great Blue Herons, Egrets and Killdeer.
You can also find lots of raptors and brids of prey including Red Tail Hawks, Great Horned Owls, Barred Owls, Barn Owls, Peregrine Falcons, Kestrels, and famously, the American Bald Eagle.
