The Flash: Rebirth

Johns, Geoff, and Ethan Van Sciver. The Flash: Rebirth. New York: DC Comics, 2010. Print.

Flash Rebirth cover

The Flash: Rebirth brings together all of the Flash’s back story by beginning this collection with the Flash coming back after being gone for 23 years. This collection can seem confusing if readers are unfamiliar with the Flash’s backstory and his family connections, but the elements of fighting and Johns’ storytelling work to alleviate some of the confusion. The Flash: Rebirth tells the story of Barry Allen’s entry back to life and how he feels disconnected from everything he once knew. He becomes consumed with the mystery of his mother’s death and how he was able to escape from the Speed Force, the energy field where he was trapped for all those years. Many questions surround Barry and his return and this novel works to help him answer just what happened to him.

Visual and textual style: bold drawings, detailed, conversational, informative, expository writing style, fantastical, grim

Potential readers/appeal factors: readers who are familiar with the Flash’s back story, may be confusing if readers are unfamiliar
