Doonesbury is a strip chronicling a wide group of characters, most notably the title character, Michael Doonesbury who began as a college student and is now a senior citizen, chronicling the strip’s 43 year run. Doonesbury is famous for its political and social commentary, its wry humor, the way it mixes current dramas with irony.

Visual and textual style: editorial strip, satirical, realistic, somewhat sophisticated text, brooding

Potential readers/appeal factors: political, liberal viewpoint, readers up-to-date on current events will understand better but it’s easy to delve into without such knowledge


  • Won the Pulitzer Prize for Best Editorial Cartoon in 1975 making Doonesbury was the first daily comic strip to win this. Previously, this prize was only given to single panel editorial cartoons. Was also a Nominated Finalist in 1990, 2004, and 2005
  • Nominated for an Oscar for Animated Short Film in 1977
  • Won the Cannes Film Festival Jury Special Prize in 1978
  • Academy Award nomination for best animated short film in 1978
  • Pulitzer finalist in 1990
  • “Trudeau received Certificates of Achievement from the US Army 4th Battalion 67th Armor Regiment and the Ready First Brigade in 1991 for his comic strips dealing with the first Gulf War.   • Won the National Cartoonist Society Newspaper Comic Strip Award in 1994
  • Won the Reuben Award in 1995
  • Awarded the US Army’s Commander’s Award for Public Service in 2006 for the strip series that he did about BD recovering from the loss of his leg in Iraq
  • Received the Mental Health Research Advocacy Award from the Yale School of Medicine in 2008 for his depiction of mental health issues that soldiers face when they return home from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq
  • Won the Mory’s “Louis” award in 2012
