The history and tradition of Black American music is rich and spans generations and genres. Perhaps more poignantly, the history of American popular music itself is deeply rooted inthe African American tradition. Gospel, Blues, and Rhythm and Blues music--or R&B--are cornerstones of American culture upon which newer genres of music have been built and expanded.
