Romance is Present!
Contemporary Romance novels are set in the time period in which is was written.
You might think a romance set in 1860 that was written in 1860 would be a historical romance, but it's just a reeeeaallly old contemporary romance--strange, but true!
Most of the contemporary romances on our shelves aren't very old, and those on our New shelves are the most contemporary of all.
Contemporaries, like historicals, are all about the setting, so there are many opportunities for cross-genres, like contemporary paranormal romances or contemporary romantic suspense. Usually, though, romances are assumed to be contemporary unless they're labeled historical, so you may not fid them labeled this way.
Sometimes, though, all a reader wants is a simple modern romance that takes place in our own world, if not our own state:
Or even our own country:
Several authors, like Debbie Macomber, have set many of their romances in a single town or neighborhood, which allows for linked stories, plot arcs, and character cameos:
You can search our library catalog for contemporaries (see the side bar to the right), but you should also be able to easily browse our shelves for a contemporary novel that suits you!
